A defense minister has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the potential security risks posed by Chinese-made cars, and staff have been advised to refrain from discussing classified matters in all vehicles.
Safety Guidance for MoD Personnel
During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, a defence minister commented on claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to discuss classified material while riding in China-made cars.
He said that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but stressed that safety is a issue in every modern vehicles.
We have a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their car, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any kind of car, because of the growing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to only have those secret talks in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for everyone worried about safety.
When it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Broader Defence Context
The announcement comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable China to disable buses and cause chaos to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russian spy ship has been shining lasers at RAF aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.
The broader defence situation highlights the significance of strong protocols and caution in all areas of official operations, including transport usage to communication habits.
